Durham Public Schools: gifted testing
Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG)
Grades K-12Every second grader is screened in the spring with a nationally normed aptitude test (the plan names the CogAT). Any subscore or composite at the 89th percentile or higher is an automatic referral. In grades 3-8, high scores on state or district tests also trigger automatic referrals, and anyone can nominate a student.
Published criteria
- Intellectually Gifted (IG): a composite at the 96th percentile or higher (age norms) on a nationally normed ability test such as the CogAT, OLSAT or NNAT. source
- Automatic referral (a screening step): any CogAT subscore or composite at or above the 89th percentile. AIG (aptitude plus achievement) requires an aptitude composite or matching subscore at the 89th percentile or higher plus an achievement criterion. source
- The IG composite criterion (96th percentile or higher) also accepts the NNAT. source
- The IG composite criterion (96th percentile or higher) also accepts the OLSAT. source
