Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG)

Grades K-12

All second graders take an aptitude screener at the end of grade 2; the plan names the Naglieri General Ability Tests (verbal, quantitative and nonverbal). A score of 95% or higher identifies the child as intellectually gifted (IG) for grade 3; 80-94% puts the child on the grade 3 watch list. From grade 3, students are identified with a points matrix (MCI).

Published criteria

  • Second graders at the 95th percentile or higher on the spring aptitude test are identified as intellectually gifted (IG) and served from grade 3; a total score at the 80th-94th percentile puts a student on the grade 3 AIG watch list. source
  • Grades 3 and up use the Multiple Criteria Index: percentiles and grades earn points, and total points (not a single score) decide the area of identification. source

Appeals / retesting: Step 1: a grievance form to the school; a meeting within 10 working days. Step 2: an appeal form to the Coordinator of AIG programs within 10 days of the school review; written reply within 10 working days. Step 3: further appeal as set out in the plan; NC law then allows a contested case hearing. source
