Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)

Grades K-12

Tustin universally screens all 3rd graders for GATE in two stages: a cognitive test in the fall (the Naglieri General Ability Tests), then a portfolio review for strong performers. 4th and 6th graders can be referred. For 2026-27, opt-out (grade 3) and consent forms are due September 21, 2026, testing is September 28 - October 13, 2026, and letters go out in mid-January 2027. K-2 students can screen for the Advanced Primary Learner (APL) program without a cognitive test.
